Prolonged dizziness

Question: I have inner ear inflammation about 3 weeks ago. It recovered but after that the dizziness came back again. I was prescribed with only non-dizziness pill. Is it normal for the inflammation to last this long?

Answer: Inflammation can last several weeks but sometimes, it may not be the inflammation itself but failure to compensate for weakness in one ear after the inflammation. Balance exercises help speed up recovery but older patients often take longer to recover. Physiotherapy can help such patients. Medication to suppress dizziness help patients develop confidence to exercise but may delay compensation. Medication to improve circulation to the inner ear as well as high dose Vitamin B do not suppress dizziness but may speed up recovery.
